A Week of Upsets

Football. The beautiful game. It’s wonderful. It excites us but also drives us mad at times. It unites us. It divides us. It’s unpredictable but we love it.

Everyone loves it when an underdog wins - unless it’s against your team.

There were a couple of big upsets this past week. Let’s have a look at a few of them.

Bayern beaten by Saarbrücken

1. FC Saarbrücken (currently 15th in the German 3rd Bundesliga) took down the mighty Bayern Munich 2:1 in the German DFB Pokal second round.

Newcastle United continue to win against big clubs

Newcastle is by no means an underdog team (anymore). Since September 2023 they have beaten Manchester City and PSG (4-1), and now they’ve come out on top against two big teams in 3 days.

On the 1st of November they threw Man United out of the EFL Cup by beating them 3-0 and on the 4th of November they ended Arsenal’s unbeaten run in the Premier League by beating them 1-0.

Can they keep it up by overcoming Dortmund in the Champions League tonight?

Girona’s ongoing upset in La Liga

A year and a half ago Girona was still playing in the Spanish 2nd Division. Now they are on top of La Liga after 12 matches played, above the likes of Real Madrid, Barca and Atletico. Well done Girona!

Almost a big upset by Luton…

Newly promoted Luton Town were so close to beating Liverpool and claiming the 3 points but a 95th-minute equalizer by Luis Diaz spoiled their party. Even just a draw against a team like Liverpool could still be considered an upset by Luton. Watch the highlights here.

Updates from the world of Club Football

8 of Africa’s best clubs featured in the 2023 African Football League, the first edition of Africa's newest club football tournament. Only 2 remain, Mamelodi Sundowns from South Africa and Wydad AC from Morocco. The final is played over 2 legs. Wydad AC hosted the first game and won 2-1. The 2nd leg will be played on the 12th of November in Pretoria.

Bayern may have lost to a 3rd division side in the DFB Pokal during the week, but quickly got their groove back by beating Dortmund 4-0 on Saturday in Der Klassiker.

2 of Spurs’ players were sent off in their match against Chelsea last night and their unbeaten run to the Premier League season came to an end after losing 4-1.

We have UEFA action again this week with Champions League matches tonight & tomorrow and Europa League on Thursday.

Just for fun
That's all folks
